Earth Nova
Earthnova is a climate newsroom for young readers — and a platform their own team runs.
Earthnova teaches children and teens about the changing climate through news written for young readers, structured education modules, and classroom tools for teachers. Aero has run its platform since 2015, rebuilding an aging site into one the editorial team manages on its own.
Outgrowing a site built more than a decade ago
Earthnova's old site was built in another era of the web. It had grown hard to manage, didn't work well on phones, and no longer reflected the pace of a team publishing climate news for classrooms every week. The organization needed a rebuild that non-technical staff could run day to day, while keeping the layered structure its audience depends on: one site that works for a student, a teacher, and a parent at the same time.
A climate newsroom that doubles as a classroom.
Rebuilt on Drupal with custom editorial workflows and fine-grained permissions, the site is run day to day by Earthnova's own team, with Aero handling upkeep behind the scenes. In practice, the platform:
Publishes climate news
Editors post stories across five sections, from climate science to policy and action, all written for young readers.
Simplifies classroom login
Students sign in with a code from their teacher, keeping access easy and age-appropriate.
Teaches the fundamentals
Climate Core modules and multi-part Climate Series articles give readers a structured path through climate science.
Equips teachers
Ready-to-use lesson plans pair the site's articles with activities and discussion prompts for the classroom.
Grows young writers
Year-round youth programs invite students to research, write, and publish their own reporting.
A partnership that survived a renaming.
Over 11 years, this relationship has covered more than routine upkeep. Aero rebuilt the site from the ground up, and when the organization retired its original name, Youngzine, and relaunched as Earthnova, the platform carried the new identity without starting over: same structure, same archive, same publishing routine for the team behind it. Redesigns come and go. Renaming an entire organization without pausing its mission is rarer, and it's the kind of durability this partnership was built for.
